Colon Cancer

On January 30, 2019, my sister Reba Powe Hawkins was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.  This was a shock and it sucks, but we as a family are staying positive and give it to God (Allah) to hold us up and keep us moving.

Natural Hair Transition

Ok so back in 2008 I decided to go au natural.  On top of my head LOL.  I stopped getting perms and decided to get braids to wait out the natural growth that was already started since it had been a while since my last perm.  However between when my appointment was for the braids and my initial consultation I decided to take the leap and got the "Big Chop".  Cutting off all of my damaged, permed hair and leaving me with a 1 inch Afro.

After that for the first time in my life I got braids.  Man were they heavy.  I have much respect for all my friends that wore them constantly.  I lasted until the first 3 fell out.  Even though they were at the back of my head I painstakingly took the time to pull all of them out.  And just let my hair grow from there.  I started a routine of washing it as needed, but doing a deep condition once a week, every week.

(Mid 2008) Shortly after I took out my braids and got general twists in my hair, my husband decided to take a leap into his Jamaican heritage and get dreadlocks.  With his half Indian hair grade it wasn't easy, but the end result was cool.  The first person I ever knew with dreads was my cousin Bryan.  Why Bryan did it, only God knows, but that was my first dread lock encounter.

After I had my second daughter in 2009 my hair was down to my bra in the back and I was tired of trying to do something with it.  I was Muslim by this time, but even wearing hijab daily I still had to take care of my hair at home, for my husband. I had a friend of the family start my locs. It was a journey.  Until one day in June of 2012 I found that 2 of my locs had broken off.  I was at a loss as to what happened and wasn't happy at the placement of the loss so I made an executive decision and cut my hair short again for the second time in my life.  For a while it felt good without the weight on my head and having to retwist them every so often.

However here I am 2018 wondering what to do next.  I see friends, cousins, etc starting or maintaining a loc journey.  And I truely miss them. (SIDE NOTE: Hubs cut his first in 2011 for business)  However I'm doing something I didn't do the first time and something I did before my first big chop.  I'm doing the research.  And with the era of YOUTUBE there is not only a lot of information, but I don't have to sit and read it all LOL it gets relayed to me verbally.  So as of today I'm still in debate, but I feel I'll have an update soon.

March for Babies 2016

2015 Butterfly Garden

Each year the March for babies give participants the option to donate and purchase butterflies for a butterfly garden in memorial or celebration of a life lost or granted by the aid of today's technology and funds made and given from the March of Dimes.

It is that time again, the March of Dimes has set the schedule for the 2016 March for Babies.  And the Team Qhamatas will be at it again.  We hope you will join us or at least donate.

Join our team for 2016: Team Qhamatas

Why we walk

When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to nearly half a million babies born too soon each year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies. We’ve been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2.3 billion to benefit all babies.

What to expect

This year, 3 million people will join their family, friends and colleagues in nearly 700 communities across the nation. Our volunteers and staff will encourage and support you in your efforts to raise awareness and funds. No matter if this is your first year or your 25th, you can expect the event to be fun, compelling and rewarding.

Walk Distance: 5 miles
Registration Time: 8:00 AM
Start Time: 9:00 AM
Chapter: Houston Division

Welcome to National Prematurity Awareness Month

We have made it to another year.  Welcome to the National Prematurity Awareness Month -NOVEMBER.

It's that time of year again.  I have no words for the joy I feel participating with the March for Babies each year.  The first year we did it to support the organization, but after 2009 preterm labor and birth took on a whole new meaning for me and my family.  Now we walk to support the organization, but also in memory of our DS who was born way to soon due to complications.  But we also thank the March of Dimes for all they do because after him I had 2 successful full term pregnancies with the help of medical care and weekly progesterone shots that helped me carry my DS and DD right to the 37 week mark.

So this month I want everyone to remember those in their family born to soon or those in your extended families (friends/co-workers) that were born to soon.  Wear PURPLE in love on November 17th for World Prematurity Day.

It's been awhile

It's been awhile since I've posted.  Wow  how time passes.  Well let's catch up a little shall we.

Q: Business is good, school is going well.

Mama Q: Well this year I lost my Father on July 18th :( He was the last parental figure I had left alive so that was hard.  I um, started back to school to get my masters and the credits needed to sit for the CPA.  I'm another year older but still in my twenties (for now).

Africa: Almost 8 and in 2nd grade now :) YAY!! She is doing super so far.

Khalifah: Is 3 and not yet in school, but ready for it.  I've been working with her at home though.  She is a quick study.  Last weight in she was 35" tall and 29 lbs.

Israfil: Is 1.5 years old.  He has taken to screaming his words instead of talking.  He yells and points or whines.  uggh But he knows how to talk because he lets words slip so I know he knows, he just prefers to squeal, yelp, yell and whine. Last weight in he was 31" tall and 26 lbs. I know him and Khalifah are more like twins at this point instead of being 16 months apart.

Well that's the news for today.  I hope to come back sooner and update more often :)

Lupus Awareness Month!!! Help solve this cruel mystery!

Help Solve the Cruel Mystery of Lupus by Raising Awareness this May

Lupus is one of the cruelest, most mysterious diseases on earth -- an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. Research shows lupus, which affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans, is more pervasive and more severe than people think, and has an impact that the public doesn’t realize.

May is Lupus Awareness Month and we can all do our part to raise awareness of lupus and show support for those who suffer from its brutal impact. The Lupus Foundation of America is urging the public to join them throughout the month to educate others and improve public understanding of lupus -- an important key to unlocking the mysteries of lupus.

The Lupus Foundation of America is working to energize the public and ultimately Congress to devote serious resources to lupus research. Without sufficient funding, research studies to find the causes of lupus and to discover new safe, tolerable and effective lupus treatments will be delayed and the search for a cure will be seriously impaired. You can go online to sign a petition asking Congress to provide more money for lupus research at lupus.org/petition.

The Lupus Foundation of America is also again asking the public to Put On Purple for lupus awareness by wearing purple and telling people why they are showing their support for all people affected by this disease. Put On Purple DayTM will take place on Friday, May 17, 2013, and is one of many programs taking place during May.

There are many other ways you can help raise awareness of lupus during May. Lupus Awareness Month activities include social media, online and grassroots components and there are many tools available so everyone can get involved and educate their communities.

The public can learn more about lupus and ways to get involved in improving awareness of this devastating disease this May by visiting the Lupus Foundation of America’s website at lupus.org. Tools, free of charge, are available at lupus.org/awarenesskit.

From Productive Muslim: "Because Khadijah Asked...."

“Because Khadijah Asked…” An Alternative Path To Meeting Mr. Right

Beacuse Khadijah Asked...An Alternative Path to Finding Mr.Right - Productive MuslimKhadijah. Just saying her name instantly inspires me to want to be a stronger Muslimah, to sacrifice more, to discover her hidden strength and beauty she gave to her husband.
Khadijah. Who was this amazing, strong, beautiful, brilliant, pious and noble woman? I don’t mean who was she in the Seerah text, but who was she? What was it like to be her friend, what events shaped her life? What would it have been like to sit down with her over a meal and talk? What kind of advice could she tell me about marriage, Mr. Right, and living until your last breath is gone, all for the sake of Allah?
It is because of her that our Deen begins with a legacy that starts, after Rasullah, with a woman. After the Mercy of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) (glorified and exalted be He), it is because of her sacrifices that we are Muslims today. She gave everything she had, all that she owned, from her hands, heart, and soul for Islam.
But to appreciate this beautiful opportunity she had, we have to go back to a very significant moment in time. That moment is when she asked her maid servant to inquire about the young man who was working for her to see if he was available for marriage and would consider her. A man who had a beautiful character and was honest, hardworking, trustworthy and produced amazing results for her business.
Khadijah asked.
Khadijah, may Allah’s Mercy be upon her, asked about Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) for marriage.
She initiated the communication.
She sent someone on her behalf to find out if he was available for marriage.
And it was because she asked, that she got that blessed answer.
And with that answer, was the beginning of one of the greatest stories of love for all times, and also one of the greatest examples of a true Muhsina and Mu’mina.
A woman older than him, previously married with children, was inquiring about a younger bachelor, from one of the best tribes in town. The honor of his acceptance wasn’t just hers alone. It was his too. He was going to marry one of the most beautiful hearts in all of Mecca. A woman whose heart would sacrifice everything she had to support him and Islam.
Khadijah asked.
Today, you’re probably wondering when and how you will get married. You go to school, maybe then graduate school, and after this begin a career. As time passes, the pressure begins to set in to get married. But out there in the world, you see many single and available brothers that you could consider as a Mr. Right potential.
What I want you to realize, is that many Mr. Right potentials, have no idea you’re available for marriage, ready to settle down, have time for a husband, or willing to accept him for where he is right now in his career and education. After all, few brothers in their early 20s will have enough income saved up for a luxury wedding, vacation, apartment and car all at once. But I meet sisters who tell me that this isn’t the main issue, that they can wait while he builds his career and financial situation.
How is he ever going to know that you don’t mind letting him build things up over time? After all, he is living under the impression of the same cultural status that you are.
I recently surveyed the brothers on our Practimate list and told them I was teaching you to be proactive, similar to Khadijah, in finding a husband, by sending a third party to inquire on their behalf, whether a mahram or a trusted friend. I asked them if they thought this was weird, desperate or something they would consider offensive.
Their responses broke the common myth!
One brother said,
“It will be more helpful if the word is “out there” in an appropriate manner. I feel like the present times are a bit in transition where old systems are failing (the waiting game) and new systems are coming into play, and we are held up between the two. For my parents’ time the waiting thing worked as it had the right setting from every perspective…”
Another brother said,
“A girl needs to put all the “games” aside and just be real with people. If that means that she tells her family about the brother…so they can talk with him, so be it. In fact, if a sister’s family or someone she knows came to me telling me that a sister is interested in me, I would at the very least check it out; I would take the opportunity seriously. Khadijah sent someone to speak with the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) about marriage…she took the initiative, this also shows that a women is strong and willing to take charge when needed. The sister has to be a REAL, genuine person, down to earth (for it to work.)”
In general, the idea of you sending someone, respectably speaking, to inquire with tactfulness, and in a good manner – not a “I have a friend who likes you” mentality, but again, with maturity and modesty, is something a mature man, ready for marriage, will appreciate. Only 1% of the brothers who responded didn’t agree with my recommendation. And it’s not that he disagreed, just felt that men should be more pro-active themselves, if they really want to be married.
So why not pursue Mr. Right like Khadijah?
Sadly, we have ignored this example (and others) from Islam of women sending a “messenger” to inquire on their behalf about marriage. That they were proactively involved in the marriage process. Sisters accuse others of being desperate when they let others know they are looking to get married. Families believe that a daughter must be sought after and it is shameful for a daughter and her family to approach a man for marriage.
And so, many beautiful, smart, educated and talented women are waiting and waiting for Mr. Right to knock on their father’s door. And in the silence of a new beautiful day, when no one is looking you may feel sad and despair. Of course, you know all things are in the hands of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)(glorified and exalted be He). Of course you know that there is reward in sabr, but you are like everyone else on the planet. A desire to marry, and one day to begin a new family. So rather than judgment and a discussion on the ideal bubble we all “should” be living in:
It’s time to re-examine our value system, and not forbid or look down upon something approved of and practiced by the best man on the face of the earth, and our Mother for all believers, one of the best women in human history.
The re-examination process, begins with you.
If you are ready to consider an alternative option for seeking out Mr. Right, then first, I want to mention that there are rules to this pro-active approach.
Here are some guidelines to follow if you are considering being the pro-active person in initiating marriage dialogue.

1) Never initiate something without having a wali or mahram having complete knowledge of what is going on.

This protects you and the potential Mr. Right from ending up in a situation not pleasing to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)(glorified and exalted be He). You want to go through this process in a halal and dignified manner.

2) Send someone you trust to ask on your behalf, without initially revealing your identity.

This way, you know if the brother is even available before revealing your personal information. One brother mentioned in the survey responses, that it’s great to give a brother a heads up that someone is interested, because if he is talking to another sister already, then he can let the messenger know, and if it doesn’t work out, he can come back and also let her know.
If he is interested, then have your “go between” share who you are, and ask the brother how you and your wali can contact him – but communication should always go back to your wali or mahram.

3) Pray istikharah.

We ask Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) (glorified and exalted be He) to guide us daily every time we say “Ihdina Siratul-Mustaqeem” in Salah, but we are also blessed to have a special du’a just for making decisions.
The reality is that many brothers out there desperately want to get married, but feel there are so many hurdles to overcome to get there.
The first hurdle, is fearing rejection. Women tend to think men always have their act all put together, but they have their own batch of insecurities and fears. It may make things easier for a man to consider you when he already knows you are interested. And if he isn’t, he will be more confident in pursuing the right person for him in the future.
And what about you? Doesn’t this put you on the line to face rejection. Of course it does, but you have two choices. Do nothing, wait and handle the challenges of just waiting, which is fine if this is the path you want to take. Or do something, be pro-active, possibly meet your Mr. Right and handle the challenges of asking.
In every other area of ‘ibahadah, we don’t sit down and wait for it to come. For Hajj we save, for money we work, for knowledge we seek it out. Marriage doesn’t have to be an exception.
Because Khadijah asked, you could too.

What it is? or Isn't?

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia remains an elusive disease. It is really a syndrome, or a collection of problems that share pain, sleep disturbance, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and trouble concentrating. Others experienced list of other problems, but everybody shares the common experience of lost quality of life.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

In addition to pain, people with fibromyalgia could also have:
  • Cognitive and memory problems (sometimes called “fibro fog”)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Morning stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Numbness or tingling of hands and feet
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights

Fibromyalgia affects as many as 5 million Americans ages 18 and older. Most people with fibromyalgia are women (about 80 - 90 percent). However, men and children also can have the disorder. Most people are diagnosed during middle age.

How common is fibromyalgia? Who is mainly affected?

Fibromyalgia can occur by itself, but people with certain other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritislupus, and other types of arthritis, may be more likely to have it. Individuals who have a close relative with fibromyalgia are more likely to develop it themselves.

Ramadhan Focused

With a little more than a month to go before Ramadhan starts I have already started preparing.  I am in the process of working up meal plans and days(nights) at the masjid.  I have also started to put together ideas for what I want to buy everyone to wear for EID and gifts to give.  I am looking forward to the blessings of this month and pray that I am able to sustain the fast and my breastfeeding.
